Clover online ordering for restaurants: fees, setup and delivery
Yes, Clover has online ordering for restaurants, and Clover says it adds no setup fee, no subscription and no commission: you pay only Clover's card-not-present rate on each online order [1][2]. That rate is reported at 3.5% + 10¢ on restaurant plans, so a $25 online order costs you about $0.98 [3][4]. You need a Clover restaurant software plan to use it, and those are reported at about $89.95 to $129.85 a month, plus the hardware [3][4].
Below: what Clover's ordering includes, the fees in one table, one $25 order through Clover and five other ways, a month of 300 orders, how delivery and Order with Google work on Clover, setup step by step, and when a Clover restaurant is better off with a different ordering page. Clover sells through banks and resellers as well as directly, so your own quote can differ from the figures here: check it before you decide.
Does Clover have online ordering?
It does. Clover Online Ordering is a free part of Clover's software for restaurants and food businesses; Clover's own post says it is "currently available to restaurants and food service businesses only" [1]. Orders and payments run through the Clover POS you already have: an online order prints or appears on your Clover device like an order taken at the counter, and the money settles with the rest of your card sales [1].
Clover's blog also says your Clover needs to run a restaurant software plan (it names Counter Service and Table Service, the older names for the quick-service and full-service plans) before online ordering and the delivery partners can be turned on [5]. If you have a retail plan, or a Clover Go reader only, ask Clover which plan you'd need before planning around it.
What you get, according to Clover and the guides that walk through it [1][6][7]:
- An ordering website with your Clover menu, items, prices, modifiers and photos, linked from your own site or Google.
- Pickup, curbside and delivery options, with your prep time and order minimums. A Clover community thread reports the pickup choices are in-store or curbside only [8].
- The Clover app for diners on iOS and Android, where your restaurant can also run rewards and promotions [1].
- Scan to Order: a QR code on the table that opens the same online menu for dine-in orders and payment [9].
- Delivery by DoorDash drivers (DoorDash Drive) for a flat fee per trip, set up from the dashboard [5][10].
- Order with Google: Google's "Order online" button on your listing can open your Clover ordering page, and those orders land in Clover [11].
What it doesn't do well, from the same guides: much design control over the ordering page, marketing beyond the app's rewards, and your own drivers. A merchant on Clover's community board with their own drivers found that Clover's delivery sends a DoorDash driver every time [12].
Clover online ordering fees and cost
Clover doesn't publish its restaurant prices in a form we could read directly, so the plan figures come from 2026 pricing breakdowns that cite Clover, NerdWallet and Tech.co [3][4]. The ordering fees come from Clover's own posts [1][2][11].
| What you pay | Amount | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Setup fee for online ordering | $0 | Clover [1] |
| Monthly fee for online ordering | $0 (part of the restaurant plan) | Clover [1][2] |
| Commission per online order | $0 | Clover [2] |
| Card fee on an online order (card not present) | 3.5% + 10¢ (reported) | [3][4] |
| Card fee in person (restaurant plans) | 2.3% + 10¢ (reported; 2.5–2.6% on some plans) | [3][4] |
| Restaurant software plan | about $89.95, $109.90 or $129.85 a month (reported) | [3][4] |
| Hardware | Mini about $849, Station Solo about $1,799, Station Duo about $1,899 (reported) | [3] |
| Delivery by a DoorDash driver | flat fee per order; $6.99 when it launched in 2021 | Clover, Fiserv [10][11] |
| Order with Google takeout | $0 extra to you or the diner | Clover [11] |
Two things to check on your own statement. First, the online rate: 3.5% + 10¢ is higher than the in-person rate, so moving counter orders online costs you a little more per order on Clover, not less. Second, any service or convenience fee: Clover lets you add a convenience fee that the diner pays on online orders [13], and one ordering company reports a $1.49 fee on some Clover orders of $30 or more that Clover doesn't list in its own pages [6]. We couldn't confirm that one; look at a real online order's receipt after your first week.
One $25 order, six ways
Here's what a single $25 pickup order costs the restaurant through Clover and the usual alternatives. Figures are each company's published or reported US rate; tax and tip left out.
| Where the diner orders | Rate | You pay on $25 | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clover Online Ordering (paid online) | 3.5% + 10¢ [3] | $0.98 | $24.02 |
| Square Online, Free plan | 3.3% + 30¢ [14] | $1.13 | $23.87 |
| DoorDash's own ordering page (Storefront), Starter | 2.9% + 30¢ [15] | $1.03 | $23.98 |
| DoorDash Marketplace pickup | 6% [16] | $1.50 | $23.50 |
| DoorDash Marketplace delivery, Basic | 15% [16] | $3.75 | $21.25 |
| A page where the diner pays at pickup, card on your Clover | 2.3% + 10¢ [3] | $0.68 | $24.33 |
On a single order, Clover's ordering is cheap, and far cheaper than the apps. The difference that matters is between Clover's online ordering and the delivery apps, not between Clover and the other ordering pages, which all land within a few cents.
A month worked out: 300 online orders
Say a takeout place does 300 online orders a month at $25 each, $7,500 in online sales. On Clover:
- Card fees on online orders: 3.5% of $7,500 = $262.50, plus 300 × 10¢ = $30. $292.50.
- Online ordering fee: $0. Commission: $0 [1][2].
- The software plan, about $89.95 or more [3]: you'd pay that for your POS anyway, so it isn't an online ordering cost unless you'd otherwise not be on Clover.
The same 300 orders on DoorDash Marketplace delivery at 15% would cost $1,125, and at Plus's 25%, $1,875 [16]. If the same diners ordered ahead and paid at the counter on your Clover, the card fee would be 2.3% + 10¢: $172.50 + $30 = $202.50, about $90 a month less than paying online.
So if you already run Clover, turning on its online ordering is one of the cheapest ways to take orders. Buying Clover only to get online ordering is a different sum: the hardware and a plan of $90 or more a month would cost more than most free or low-cost ordering pages charge in a year. The options are in free online ordering systems for restaurants.
Clover online ordering delivery
Clover has no drivers of its own. Delivery runs one of three ways:
- DoorDash Drive through Clover. In the dashboard you apply from the Online Ordering section; once DoorDash approves you, delivery orders placed on your Clover menu are sent to a DoorDash driver automatically [5]. You pay a flat fee per delivery, not a commission. Clover and Fiserv announced it at $6.99 a delivery in November 2021 [10]; that's four years old, so check today's fee in your dashboard. Clover's restaurant platform help says Drive needs a 15% tip shown and pre-selected for guests at checkout [17], and the tip goes to the driver. You choose how much of the delivery fee the diner pays [11].
- Your own drivers. Clover's ordering doesn't send orders to your own drivers when Drive is on; one merchant reports a DoorDash driver is dispatched for every order [12]. Some third-party ordering apps in the Clover App Market handle in-house delivery.
- The delivery apps' own marketplaces. DoorDash, Uber Eats and Grubhub can send their orders into Clover through integrations, but those orders carry the apps' usual commissions: see DoorDash's commission for restaurants.
On a $25 delivery order with the diner paying $3.99 of a $6.99 Drive fee, you'd pay the card fee ($0.98) plus $3.00 of the delivery fee: about $3.98, close to DoorDash Basic's $3.75 commission. Delivery by Drive saves money mainly when the diner covers more of the fee, or the order is larger: on a $50 order, a flat fee beats a percentage by more.
Clover and Order with Google
Google shows an "Order online" button on restaurant listings. Clover is one of its partners. When Clover announced it, diners could check out inside Google; since July 1, 2024 Google no longer takes orders itself, and the button opens the partner's ordering page instead (how Google online ordering works now). The orders still go straight into Clover, and Clover said takeout through Google costs nothing extra to you or the diner [11]. Delivery through Google goes to a DoorDash driver at the same flat fee as Drive [11]. To set it up, open the Online Ordering hub in your Clover dashboard, go to Delivery, choose Order with Google, and complete the forms; Clover turns on online ordering if it isn't already on [11].
After it's on, check your Google Business Profile: you can choose which ordering link is the preferred one, so the button opens your own page rather than a delivery app that lists you. How to do it is in Google Business Profile for restaurants.
The Clover app and Scan to Order
Diners can order from you in the Clover app on iPhone and Android, the same menu as your ordering website [1]. The app is Clover's, not yours: it lists other Clover businesses too, and the diner signs in with Clover. It's useful for rewards (a stamp card that runs itself) but most diners will order from a link on Google or your site, not an app they'd have to install.
Scan to Order puts a QR code on each table that opens your Clover online menu for dine-in orders and payment [9]. Clover's pages list different device and plan requirements for it [9]; confirm with Clover that your devices and printer are supported before you print codes.
How to set up Clover online ordering, step by step
From Clover's own posts and the help pages of apps built on it [1][5][7][18]:
- Check your plan. A restaurant software plan is needed [5].
- Fix your business details. Address, phone and service hours in your Clover account, because the ordering page uses them [18].
- Clean the menu in Clover. Every item that sells online needs a clear name, a price, its modifiers (sizes, add-ons, "no onions") and, ideally, a photo. Hide items you can't make for takeout.
- Open the Online Ordering hub in your Clover web dashboard and sign up for Clover's ordering [1].
- Choose order types: pickup, curbside, delivery, dine-in [6].
- Set prep time and minimums. The default prep time sits in the online ordering settings; you can also change it on the device under Setup, Online Ordering, Settings [7][19].
- Turn on delivery if you want it: DoorDash from the Online Ordering section, Get Started, then DoorDash's form [5].
- Place three test orders: a simple one, one with every modifier, and one at the edge of your hours. Watch where each prints and how long it takes.
- Share the link: the Order button on your Google listing, your own website's first screen, Instagram, and a card in every bag.
To pause orders on a busy night, ordering apps on Clover let you switch online ordering off for a set time from the device [19][20]; test where that switch is before you need it.
Clover online ordering website: your own site or Clover's page?
Clover gives you an ordering page, not a restaurant website. Diners searching your name still want your hours, address, photos and a menu they can read before they order, and Google reads a text menu on a page better than an ordering widget (how Google reads your menu). Three common setups:
- A simple website with an "Order online" button that opens your Clover ordering page. Cheapest, and you keep Clover's $0 commission.
- An ordering app from the Clover App Market that sits on your own site and syncs the Clover menu. Some charge a monthly fee or a diner service fee; Bento's Clover service, for example, charges diners $0.99 an order [21].
- A website builder with its own ordering, bypassing Clover's. You'd lose the orders printing on Clover unless the builder integrates. Compare them in restaurant website builders with online ordering.
If you don't have a website yet, you can build a free menu site from a photo of your menu, with pickup ordering that rings your phone, and put your Clover ordering link on it if you'd rather keep orders in Clover.
When Clover ordering fits, and when it doesn't
| Your situation | Our read |
|---|---|
| Already on a Clover restaurant plan | Turn it on. $0 commission, orders on the device you already use. |
| Want delivery without your own drivers | Drive's flat fee can beat app commissions on bigger orders; check today's fee. |
| Have your own drivers | Clover's built-in delivery sends DoorDash drivers; look at an App Market app instead. |
| Not on Clover, want online ordering only | Don't buy a POS for it. A free ordering page costs less. |
| Mostly regulars ordering ahead | Pay at pickup costs less per order (in-person rate) than paying online. |
| Comparing with Square | Square's free plan has no monthly fee; see Square online ordering for restaurants. |
Common mistakes
- Assuming online orders cost the in-person rate. Online is card-not-present, reported at 3.5% + 10¢, over a point higher.
- Leaving Google's Order button on a delivery app after turning on Clover ordering. Set your own link as preferred.
- Never reading a real receipt. Check for convenience or service fees on the first online orders.
- Turning on Drive without checking the tip setting. A 15% pre-selected tip on top of a delivery fee can surprise diners; say so on the menu.
- Putting only the Clover link online. A bare ordering page doesn't answer "are they open?" or "where do I park?". Pair it with a real website.
- Hiding the menu in a photo. Diners and Google both need the menu as text.
Questions
Is Clover online ordering free?
Clover says there's no setup fee, subscription or commission for its online ordering [1][2]. You still pay the card-not-present rate on each order, reported at 3.5% + 10¢ [3], and the Clover restaurant plan itself.
How much does Clover charge per online order?
Only the card fee: about $0.98 on a $25 order at 3.5% + 10¢ [3]. Delivery by a DoorDash driver adds a flat fee per trip [11].
Does Clover online ordering work with DoorDash?
Yes, two ways: DoorDash Drive delivers orders placed on your Clover menu for a flat fee [5][10], and DoorDash Marketplace orders can flow into Clover through an integration, at DoorDash's usual commission [16].
Can I use Clover online ordering without a Clover POS?
No. It runs through your Clover device and needs a restaurant software plan [1][5].
How do I turn off Clover online ordering for a night?
Ordering apps on Clover have a pause on the device, for today or until you turn it back on [19][20]. Clover support can also help.
Is Clover or Square cheaper for online ordering?
Per order they're close: $0.98 on Clover against $1.13 on Square's free plan for $25 [3][14]. Square's ordering can start with no monthly fee; Clover's comes with a paid restaurant plan.
