Does DoorDash charge commission on pickup orders?
Yes. DoorDash charges US restaurants 6% of the food subtotal on every pickup order, on all three Marketplace plans: Basic, Plus and Premier [1]. On a $25 pickup order that's $1.50. DoorDash says the pickup rate also covers card processing on the diner's payment [2], so there's no second fee on top.
The only DoorDash pickup orders with no commission are the ones placed on your own website through DoorDash's Online Ordering (once called Storefront), which pay card processing only, 2.9% + $0.30 [3]. Below: the rates side by side, the catch that can cost you the 6% rate, one pickup order through every app, a month worked out, and how to move your pickup regulars to a page that costs nothing per order.
DoorDash's pickup commission by plan
DoorDash's delivery commission changes with your plan. Its pickup commission doesn't [1]:
| Plan | Delivery commission | Pickup commission | Pickup fee on a $25 order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | 15% | 6% | $1.50 |
| Plus | 25% | 6% | $1.50 |
| Premier | 30% | 6% | $1.50 |
| Your site via DoorDash Online Ordering | 0% (card processing only) | 0% (card processing only) | about $1.03 |
Three things follow from this table:
- Your plan choice is a delivery decision. Moving from Basic to Premier costs you nothing extra on pickups. If your DoorDash orders are mostly pickups, the plan you pick matters much less than the share of pickups you could take direct.
- The rate is on the subtotal. DoorDash figures its commission on the food subtotal, before tax and tip [1]. A $25 order with $2 tax and a $3 tip still pays 6% of $25.
- There's no monthly fee for pickup. The Marketplace plans list no monthly fee or contract [1]. You pay only when an order arrives.
Outside the US the rates differ: DoorDash's Canadian page lists 8% to 10% on pickup [4]. Large chains (over 75 locations) negotiate their own rates [1].
What the 6% pays for
On a delivered order, DoorDash's commission pays for the driver, support, the listing and card processing [2]. On a pickup order there's no driver. What's left is:
- The listing. You show up in the DoorDash app, including for diners nearby who choose Pickup to avoid delivery fees.
- The checkout. The diner pays in the app; DoorDash processes the card. That alone would cost about 2.9% + $0.30 elsewhere, roughly 4.1% on a $25 order.
- Support and the tablet flow. The order arrives the same way as a delivery, with the same refund and support process.
So of the $1.50 on a $25 pickup, about $1.03 is what any card processor would charge, and about $0.47 is what you pay DoorDash for the listing and the app. For a new diner who found you in the app, that's cheap. For a regular who already knows your name, it's money for a channel they didn't need.
The catch: matching your in-store prices
Many restaurants raise their prices on DoorDash to cover the 15% to 30% delivery commission. The 6% pickup rate is reported to depend on your pickup prices matching your in-store prices [5]. If your DoorDash menu is marked up for every order, check in your Merchant Portal whether your pickup orders are still on 6%, and whether a separate pickup menu at store prices is available to you.
Uber Eats spells this rule out on its pricing page: 7% on pickup when your app prices match your store, 10% when they don't [6]. Either way, the same trade-off holds. A delivery markup can raise the rate you pay on pickups, and it makes your pickup diners pay more than they would at your counter, which is the one place they could have ordered for free.
Who sets app prices, how much restaurants mark up, and the markup that covers each plan are in does DoorDash mark up prices.
One $25 pickup order, eight ways
The same $25 food subtotal, ordered for pickup through each channel, at each platform's published or reported rate. Your food and packaging cost isn't taken out yet.
| How the pickup order comes in | Fee | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| DoorDash app, any plan (6%) [1] | $1.50 | $23.50 |
| Uber Eats app, prices matched (7%) [6] | $1.75 | $23.25 |
| Uber Eats app, prices not matched (10%) [6] | $2.50 | $22.50 |
| Grubhub app, Basic (5% + processing) [7] | $2.31 | $22.69 |
| Grubhub app, Plus (15% + processing) [7] | $4.81 | $20.19 |
| Your site via DoorDash Online Ordering (2.9% + $0.30) [3] | $1.03 | $23.97 |
| Your site via Uber Webshop (2.5% + $0.29) [6] | about $0.92 | about $24.08 |
| Your own page, diner pays at the counter | $0 online | $25.00, less your usual counter card fee |
On one order the gaps look small: $1.50 here, $2.31 there. The reason to care is volume. Pickup orders are usually the frequent ones: the same office worker every Tuesday, the same family every Friday.
For the delivery side of the same apps, with every plan worked out, see DoorDash's commission fee for restaurants, Uber Eats commission for restaurants and Grubhub's commission fee.
A month of DoorDash pickups, worked out
An example, not your numbers: a café or takeout place with 150 DoorDash pickup orders a month at an average $22 subtotal, $3,300 in food sales.
| If those pickups came through | Fees a month | Fees a year |
|---|---|---|
| DoorDash app, 6% | $198 | $2,376 |
| Uber Eats app, 10% (prices marked up) | $330 | $3,960 |
| DoorDash Online Ordering on your site (2.9% + $0.30) | $140.70 | $1,688 |
| Your own page, pay at the counter | $0 online | $0 online |
To run your own numbers, open last month's statement in the DoorDash Merchant Portal and find the pickup orders and their subtotal. Multiply the subtotal by 0.06. That's what DoorDash took for orders where the diner walked in and carried the food out themselves.
Then ask one question: how many of those diners had ordered from you before? DoorDash's reports show repeat customers. If a large share of pickups are repeats, most of that yearly figure is money paid to reach people who already know where you are.
Who orders pickup through DoorDash
Pickup diners in a delivery app are often not new to you. They chose pickup because they live or work close, and they already know your food. Typical cases:
- The habit orderer. They use DoorDash for everything, so they use it for you too, even from across the street.
- The fee dodger. They opened DoorDash for delivery, saw the delivery and service fees, and switched to pickup.
- The finder. They searched the app for "tacos" or "coffee", saw you nearby, and picked you up. This is the diner the 6% is fair for.
The first two would order from your own page if it were as easy as the app: one tap from Google, a menu that loads fast, and a pickup time. The third is why you might keep DoorDash pickup turned on even after you have your own page.
Is 6% on pickup worth it?
For most independent places, yes for new diners and no for regulars. A simple way to decide:
- Keep DoorDash pickup on if the app sends you new people you can see in its reports. 6% of a first order is a low price for a customer.
- Move the regulars to your own page with the steps below. You don't have to leave DoorDash to do it.
- Turn pickup off in the app only if almost every pickup diner is a repeat and you've given them an easy way to order direct. Turning it off before that just makes them order somewhere else.
One more point: a pickup order through your own page also gives you the diner's name and number, so you can tell them about tomorrow's special. A pickup through the app gives you the order only.
How to move pickup regulars to 0%
- Have a page where diners can order pickup. Your menu as text, prices, a pickup time, and orders that reach you right away. How to set up online ordering for your restaurant walks through the four ways to do it and what each costs.
- Put it on Google. Google Business Profile lets you add your own ordering link and choose your preferred link for pickup [8]. Diners who search your name are your regulars; send them to your page, not the app.
- Match or beat the app price. If your DoorDash menu is marked up, your own page is cheaper. Say so plainly: "Same food, lower price when you order here."
- Put a card in every pickup bag. "Next time, order pickup direct" with a QR code to your page. The pickup bag is the one thing you know a regular will hold in their hand.
- Tell them at the counter. When a DoorDash pickup diner comes in, the person handing over the bag can say it once: "You can order direct on our site, it's cheaper." Once, friendly, no pressure.
- Make the first screen of your site one button. Order for pickup. Not a PDF menu, not a "Find us on DoorDash" link.
- Count it every month. Direct pickups, DoorDash pickups, and the 6% you paid. If direct isn't rising after two months, check which step you skipped.
If you don't have a page yet, you can build a free menu site with pickup ordering from a photo of your menu. Diners pay you at the counter, so no one takes a cut, and each order rings your phone.
Common mistakes
- Thinking pickup is free on DoorDash. It isn't: it's 6% on the Marketplace, 0% only on your own site.
- Choosing a plan for pickups. Pickup costs the same on every plan. Choose the plan on delivery numbers.
- Marking up pickup with delivery. One marked-up menu can raise your pickup rate on some apps and charges your nearest diners more than your counter.
- A "Find us on DoorDash" sticker on the door. It sends walk-in regulars to a channel that charges you for them.
- Never looking at the repeat share. The number that tells you whether 6% is buying new diners or taxing old ones is in your reports.
Questions
How much does DoorDash charge restaurants for pickup orders?
6% of the food subtotal on Basic, Plus and Premier in the US [1]. On a $25 pickup order, $1.50.
Does the 6% include card processing?
DoorDash says its pickup rate also covers payment processing on the diner's order [2], so there's no separate card fee on app pickups.
Is DoorDash Storefront pickup free?
There's no commission on orders through DoorDash's Online Ordering on your own site; you pay card processing, 2.9% + $0.30 per order on the Starter package [3]. The tiers are in DoorDash Storefront fees.
Does DoorDash charge commission on the tip?
No. DoorDash's commission is on the food subtotal, before tax and tip [1].
Can I turn off pickup on DoorDash?
Pickup is part of every Marketplace plan [1]. Your store's pickup setting is in the Merchant Portal or with DoorDash support. Move your regulars to your own page first, so turning it off doesn't send them elsewhere.
Is Uber Eats pickup cheaper than DoorDash pickup?
No: Uber Eats charges 7% on pickup with matched prices and 10% without [6], against DoorDash's 6% [1]. The two apps are compared in full in DoorDash vs Uber Eats for restaurants.
