DoorDash Storefront fees: what direct ordering really costs
DoorDash Storefront, now called Online Ordering, charges no commission and no monthly fee on its Starter package: you pay only card processing of 2.9% + $0.30 per order [1]. On a $25 order that's about $1.03, against $3.75 to $7.50 for the same order delivered through the DoorDash app. The paid tiers, Boost and Pro, add marketing tools for a monthly fee, reported at $54 and $249 a store [2].
Below: what Storefront is today, every fee and where the reports disagree, one order and one month worked out, when Boost or Pro pays for itself, how to set it up, and how it compares with other ways to take orders on your own site.
1. What DoorDash Storefront is
Storefront is DoorDash's ordering page for your own channels: your website, your Google listing, your Instagram, a QR code on the table. Diners order from you, not from the DoorDash app, and DoorDash takes no commission on those orders [1]. DoorDash renamed it Online Ordering and made it part of a wider set of tools it calls Commerce Platform [2] [3].
What the free Starter package includes, per DoorDash's page [1]:
- A custom ordering link to add to your website, or a website built for you if you don't have one.
- Pickup and delivery, with Dashers carrying the delivery orders and live order tracking like the app's.
- Orders arriving on the DoorDash tablet, a connected POS, email or phone.
One condition matters: Online Ordering is included in the Marketplace package [1], and third-party reviews report it can't be used without an active DoorDash Marketplace partnership [3]. It's a way to move your own diners off the app's commission while staying on the app, not a way to leave DoorDash.
2. DoorDash Storefront fees and pricing tiers
| Tier | Monthly fee | Commission | Card processing | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $0 | 0% | 2.9% + $0.30 [1] (some guides report 3.3% + $0.30 [3]) | Branded ordering site or link, pickup and delivery |
| Boost | $54 a store [2] (a DoorDash trial page has shown $99 after two free months [4]) | 0% | 2.9% + $0.30 [3] | Website customization, automated emails, loyalty and gift card links |
| Pro | $249 a store [2] [4] | 0% | 2.9% + $0.30 [3] | A branded mobile app, more marketing tools, loyalty across channels |
DoorDash's own Starter page says 2.9% + $0.30 [1]. Some guides say Starter now pays 3.3% + $0.30 and only the paid tiers get 2.9% [3]. On a $25 order the gap is 10 cents. The Boost price also differs between sources, $54 or $99. Before you pick a tier, read the price shown in your Merchant Portal under the Commerce Platform tab; that is the one you'll be billed.
Who pays for delivery? Delivery orders from your Storefront are carried by Dashers [1]. On these orders the diner pays DoorDash's delivery fee and the restaurant pays processing, as reported by DoorDash's own product page for Storefront [5]. Check the fee your diners see at checkout: a high delivery fee can send them back to the app.
3. Storefront vs Marketplace: one $25 order
The same $25 food subtotal, before food cost and tax. Marketplace rates are from DoorDash's pricing page, as set out in our guide to DoorDash's commission fee for restaurants.
| How the order comes in | DoorDash's fee | You keep |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace Basic, delivered | $3.75 (15%) | $21.25 |
| Marketplace Plus, delivered | $6.25 (25%) | $18.75 |
| Marketplace Premier, delivered | $7.50 (30%) | $17.50 |
| Marketplace pickup | $1.50 (6%) | $23.50 |
| Storefront, 2.9% + $0.30 | $1.03 | $23.97 |
| Storefront, 3.3% + $0.30 | $1.13 | $23.87 |
| Your own page, diner pays at pickup | $0 | $25.00 |
Storefront's saving is large against delivery in the app and small against app pickup: 47 cents an order next to the 6% pickup rate. The money is in moving delivery regulars, not pickup regulars.
4. A month of Storefront orders, by tier
Say 200 diners a month order through your Storefront at $25: $5,000 of food sales. Processing at 2.9% + $0.30 comes to $205 ($225 at 3.3%).
| Tier | Monthly fee | Processing | Total a month | Share of sales |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $0 | $205 to $225 | $205 to $225 | 4.1% to 4.5% |
| Boost | $54 (or $99) | $205 | $259 (or $304) | 5.2% (or 6.1%) |
| Pro | $249 | $205 | $454 | 9.1% |
| Same 200 orders on Marketplace Plus | $0 | in the rate | $1,250 | 25% |
At low volume the monthly fee is what bites. With 50 direct orders a month, Pro's $249 alone is about 20% of $1,250 in sales, close to an app commission.
5. When Boost or Pro pays for itself
A paid tier earns its fee only through extra orders it brings (emails, loyalty, an app). With a 30% food cost, each $25 Storefront order leaves about $16.47 after food and processing ($25 − $7.50 − $1.03).
| Tier | Monthly fee | Extra orders a month to cover it |
|---|---|---|
| Boost | $54 | 4 |
| Boost at $99 | $99 | 7 |
| Pro | $249 | 16 |
Those are the orders the tier must create, not orders you already had. A good test: count four weeks of Storefront orders on Starter, turn the tier on for two months, and keep it only if orders rose by more than the number above. Packaging and labor aren't in the sum, so the real bar is a little higher.
6. How to set up DoorDash Storefront
- Open the Merchant Portal. If you're already on DoorDash, go to Channels, then Online Ordering. DoorDash says existing partners can set it up in under an hour; otherwise its onboarding team activates it within 2 business days [1].
- Pick the tier under the Commerce Platform tab. Start on Starter [1].
- Check the menu and prices. If your app prices are marked up, decide what your direct prices are. Diners who see lower prices direct have a reason to come back.
- Place a test pickup and a test delivery order and check that they reach the tablet or POS, and what the diner pays at checkout.
- Copy your ordering link. This is what goes everywhere below.
- Tell your regulars. A card in every DoorDash bag, a sign at the counter, a line on your receipts.
7. Where to put your Storefront link
- Your website's first screen. One button: "Order pickup" or "Order online". Not a PDF menu, not a link to the app.
- Google Business Profile. Add your own ordering link and choose it as preferred [6]. People searching your name are mostly regulars, the diners you least want to pay commission on.
- Instagram and Facebook bio. Replace the app link.
- A QR code on tables, the window and takeout bags.
8. DoorDash Storefront vs other direct ordering
| Option | Fee per $25 order | Needs |
|---|---|---|
| DoorDash Storefront (Starter) | $1.03 to $1.13 | A DoorDash Marketplace account |
| Grubhub Direct | No commission; card processing on prepaid orders | A Grubhub account |
| Uber Eats Webshop | about $0.92 (2.5% + $0.29) | An Uber Eats account |
| Your own site with Stripe | $1.03 (2.9% + $0.30) [7] | A site and a checkout |
| Your own site, pay at pickup | $0 | A site with pickup ordering |
Uber's and Grubhub's rates are set out in Uber Eats commission for restaurants and Grubhub's commission fee for restaurants. If you're on DoorDash already and want delivery on direct orders, Storefront is the easy step. If most of your direct orders are pickups, a page where diners pay at the counter costs nothing per order and doesn't depend on any app. You can build one free from a photo of your menu, with orders that ring your phone.
Common mistakes
- Linking your website to the DoorDash app instead of your Storefront. Every regular then pays you the app's commission.
- Buying Pro at low volume. Under about 100 direct orders a month, its fee is a large share of sales.
- Same marked-up prices direct. Give diners a reason to order from you.
- Never testing a delivery order, so you don't know the fee your diners see.
- Forgetting the condition. It comes with the Marketplace package [1]; ask what happens to your ordering page and diner list if you ever leave.
